Like the family support group meeting, the young people’s meeting also focuses on pertinent topics that challenge old ineffective ways of thinking and coping. We emphasize the exploration and development of new tools and new coping skills based upon the 12-step model of recovery. It is a huge relief not to feel alone or isolated. Listening and feeling understood is a bridge to becoming open and empowered to make better choices for themselves.
It is so important that the young person’s immediate family (age appropriate) have the opportunity to participate in the various options that are inclusive to their struggles, hurts and worries. This is accomplished through family events and groups, family counseling and therapy. The siblings are often overlooked and should be given the dignity to have a voice that helps promote health for the entire family.
